We believe all students can achieve high standards in Literacy. Our high expectations combined with focused teaching and engaging lessons have a great impact on student achievement. We assess our students to inform individual learning plans and provide point of need teaching. Students participate in a variety of lessons, incorporating ICT such as iPads, interactive whiteboards and computers. Our structured daily Literacy block scaffolds students to reach their greatest potential in Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening.
Our students participate in an exciting Japanese program taught by an experienced Japanese teacher. Using our video conferencing unit, students enjoy working online and with other schools to develop their language skills in Japanese and further expand their cultural awareness of Japan. They participate in two structured lessons per week, one shared with other schools. This gives our students a unique opportunity to participate in a first class L.O.T.E. program.
P.E. and Fitness
Our physical education program is a positive experience for students to be active and aware of the importance of health and everyday activity. Students participate in daily fitness activities focusing on speed, strength, endurance and maintaining a positive frame of mind to exceed personal goals. They also complete weekly sport activities that are focused on teamwork, sportsmanship and specific skills. We offer a swimming program and compete in cluster school sports days, athletics days and cross country.
During Numeracy, we model and teach concepts explicitly to students before providing them with the opportunity to consolidate their understanding in practical experiences. We encourage our students to think beyond the immediate mathematical concepts and into real life by offering an inquiry based numeracy program. Students have the opportunity to work with concrete materials, ICT and in 'real world' situations to develop strong and long lasting understandings of numeracy.
The Arts (including film making)
The Mt Egerton Arts program consists of instruction in the areas of visual arts, performing arts, music and digital arts (film making). We are fortunate enough to have a teacher who is a former film editor which gives our students a unique opportunity and insight into this field. Students have the opportunity to learn musical instruments such as guitar and keyboard and all participate in generalist music lessons and singing. Our comprehensive visual arts program has produced many of the decorations around the school from mosaics to outdoor portraits to woodwork pieces.
Science, Environment and Cooking
We are fortunate enough to be adjacent to a Koala Reserve. This forms the foundation for our environmental studies program. As a part of our diverse curriculum, at different times during the year, we run a science program for all students. As we have a large teaching kitchen, complete with its own interactive whiteboard, we run cooking classes. This is a fantastic way for students to gain greater understanding of mathematical and scientific concepts they have learned.
